Sorry to bother you sir, but I’m lost. #scintilla13

Talk about where you were going the day you got lost. Were you alone? Did you ever get to where you meant to go?

I was 5 years old.

My Mom & I went to the local Fashion Bug (I think it was.) to pick up my neighbor’s daughter from work.

I was going to go in and get her, she would be waiting for us.

Come to find out, she had already been picked up and no-one told us.

I came out of the store, and my Mom’s car was gone. She was made to go park by a patrolman in the parking lot, and we got separated.

Being five years old I panicked, but remembered what your parents always told you if you got lost, “Find an adult to help.”

I started walking down to the end of the plaza and there was a cart collector there, I told him my mom was gone and I am lost. I need help.

Rather than ignore me, he went to his manager and said, “I’m going to help this girl find her mom, I’ll be right back.”

We started walking back towards the Fashion Bug and my mom eventually met us halfway.

This was a time before cellphones. Before GPS.

I couldn’t just dial a phone and get my mom on the other phone and say “Mommy, we’ve gotten separated ” and then be told to stay at that phone kiosk until she found me.

When we were finally reunited, it turns out my mom’s car started overheating. Luckily we got home before any serious damage happened and my Dad was able to fix it.

Needless to say, if your plans change. For the love of Pete, notify all parties involved so things like this don’t happen!
