Daily Prompt: Close Call

Tell us about a bullet you’re glad you dodged — when something awful almost happened, but didn’t.

This actually happened to me last Friday.

We had family from my Dad’s side over because they were dropping off their car so my Dad could work on it.

If you’re just tuning in to the game, my Dad’s side of the family are extremely religious [Roman Catholic] and well, I’m gay…so.. you do the math. I basically have to go to Narnia any time they’re around.

We were having a conversation about relationships or something and my Aunt happened to be all “Sara, when you get a boyfriend blahblahblah…” and my Mom piped up that it’ll never happen. My aunt took it as “because my Mom is overprotective as shit” but there was awkward silence until she pieced it together that overprotective wasn’t the case, but in fact that I was gay.

My Aunt was like HOLY CRAP! How long has this been? I’ve been out for over seven years. She was VERY happy for me.

and just….whew. Bullet dodged. Fluked grenade.

Coming out is always going to be an anxiety trip. It never gets easier.
